Endodontic Retreatment

With the appropriate care, your teeth that have had endodontic treatment will last as long as other natural teeth. Yet, a tooth that has received treatment may fail to heal or pain may continue to exist. Sometimes, the pain may occur months or years after treatment. If so, Endodontic Retreatment may be needed.

Improper healing may be caused by:

  • Curved or narrow canals that were not treated during the initial treatment.
  • Complicated canals that went undetected during the initial treatment.
  • The crown or restoration was not placed within the appropriate amount of time following the procedure.
  • The crown or restoration that did not prevent saliva from contaminating the inside of the tooth.

In some cases, new problems can influence a tooth that was successfully treated:

  • New decay can expose a root canal filling material, causing infection.
  • A cracked or loose filling or crown can expose the tooth to new infection.

Once retreatment has been selected as a solution to your problem, the doctors will reopen your tooth to gain access to the root canal filling material. This restorative material will be removed to enable access to the root canal. The doctors will now clean your canals and carefully examine the inside of the problematic tooth. Once cleaned, the doctors will fill and seal the canals and place a temporary filling in the tooth.

At this point, you will need to return to your dentist as soon as possible in order to have a new crown or restoration placed on the tooth to restore full functionality.

Patient Review from Philip M

After 36 years of practicing dentistry, I knew that the sudden onset of dental pain was suggestive of the need for root canal therapy. Advanced Endodontic Associates scheduled me immediately. Dr. Scott Hetz confirmed my impressions and initiated treatment. He was knowledgeable, capable, and compassionate in performing a complex retreatment procedure. The advanced "gentle wave" technology was indeed gentle and effective. My pain was totally gone in a few hours after one treatment session. The support staff was friendly, the office spotless and conveniently located. I strongly recommend this practice if you find yourself in need of endodontics care. PMM, DMD

Patient Review from Katherine C

This was actually my third visit, first was an emergency visit due to infection/swelling, and they accommodated me as soon as I could get there! Second visit was to retreat one tooth, it was a great experience given what was being done... staff and Dr Luke were great, always asking if you are ok. Third visit was today to retreat second tooth, I personally had a harder time getting comfortable with clamp etc. this visit, but they were patient until I was comfortable and then it went smoothly. I highly recommend. - Kathy

Patient Review from Leslie R

First visit and was seen by Dr. Hetz. Any type of dental work is personally overwhelming and down right frightening and Dr. Hetz and his entire team were extremely supportive and caring throughout the entire visit. Dr. Hetz not only calmed my fears but helped me understand every procedure along the way. He treated me like his only patient and took great care to answer any questions I had. I would highly recommend Dr. Hetz and Advanced Endodontic Assoc. I can't thank Dr. Hetz and his team enough.

Patient Review from Patrick H

Dr. Hetz was INCREDIBLE. I hate everything about going to the dentist, but Dr. Hetz was wonderful. His bedside manner is top notch. While I can’t say that it was a painless procedure (because no root canal is), Dr. Hetz’s professionalism and obvious passion made the whole process bearable. I would recommend Dr. Hetz to anyone that needs an Endodontist.

Patient Review from Anton G

Excellent service, great care and fantastic Dr. Hetz. It was a re-treatment of poorly done root canal many years ago. It was not easy - took two different visits and total of about 5 hours work, but it was successful. Dr. Hetz explained everything, was super friendly and nice and most importantly very skilled and knowledgeable endodontist who was able to save a tooth that otherwise would have been extracted. Thank you Dr. Hetz! Also thank you to his two assistants, I am ashamed I forgot their names, but they were also quite good and very courteous. Highly recommend this practice.

Patient Review from Eileen R

Dr. Hetz was so terrific. Despite the circumstances, it was a great experience. Dr. Hetz explained everything he was doing, why he was doing it and what to expect. He has great communications skills and made the whole ordeal a lot more bearable! He took the time to call me at home to see how I was doing. You don’t find that kind of care and attention all the time. Christopher was also a great assistant.

Patient Review from Scott S

Dr. Hetz is a calm, caring Endodontist. Effortlessly puts his patients at ease. Explains what he is doing as he is doing it (very refreshing from a medical professional). Great staff as well. I now know why he is rated at 5 stars and you will, too.
